National Work Life Week Posted On 13 October 2021

The secret to a work life balance seems to be on everyone’s lips at the moment. The change in the way many are working and the way our homes are transforming into home/office hybrids has changed the outlook employees and employers have on work life balance in a positive way.


National Work Life Week is an annual campaign run by Working Families. The aim is to get both employers and employees talking about wellbeing at work and work-life balance. Employers are encouraged to use the week to provide activities for their staff, ands to showcase their flexible working policies and practices. Why is it so important?

According to Gallup’s State of the Workplace Research conducted in 2017, 53% of employees said they prefer a role which gives them greater work-life balance and personal well-being. It is therefore, vital to create an environment that promotes the wellbeing and happiness of the team.


What should you do?

  • Prioritise
  • Allocate time to both work and to enjoy yourself. Separate the personal from the professional and schedule time for both.
  • Rules
  • Once you’ve decided on your priorities, you need to make sure you stick to them. Having some simple rules to abide by will help you to do this. Do you need a set time each day to have a digital detox and ensure you aren’t tempted to check your work emails? Having a separate office at home if you remote work is a good way to do this as you can physically shut away your work day when you have finished.
  • Spend time in Nature
  • It is easy to develop brain-fog when sat at the same desk, surrounded by fluorescent and blue light. Take time to get outside each day, even if that just means going for a 10-minute walk during your lunch break or taking a call outside in the garden.


Finally, life should be about enjoyment and relationships. Take the time to get to know your colleagues, you’ll have more fun working with and they will be more understanding if you need to take time off to attend a last-minute meeting at your child’s school or if you choose to start work earlier on Fridays to ensure an early finish.
